2nd, 4th, and 28

These are the significant numbers in my life this past week. Charlie girl turned 2 on June 29th and we celebrated her birthday with a great Elmo party last Saturday. Jess helped me plan, organize, and execute the party, and I have to say..it was a huge success. The kids bounced their hearts out in the giant bounce house, tried to whack the Elmo pinata, and enjoyed lots of yummy food. I was especially happy to celebrate my baby girl's 2nd birthday. Once again I realized how lucky we were to find the cancer early and take aggressive action so that I can enjoy so many more of my girls' birthdays.

4th of July was yesterday. I've always loved the 4th of July. It's a relatively low stress holiday full of family, fun, and usually good BBQ. It's also the date Matt and I met - in the wee hours of the morning on July 4, 2000. Yesterday marked the 11 year anniversary of our fateful (and not very sober) meeting. It's strange to think about how much has happened over the past 11 years...mainly the past 4 years to be exact. Unfortunately Matt had to work this year and missed out on most of our fun. Jess came over, along with my in laws, and we had a small (but tasty) BBQ. At dusk (because Reagan couldn't wait any longer), they helped us light off the bag of fireworks Matt bought for us. (I say "helped" but I really mean that they lit them all for us since I'm totally freaked out by lighting fireworks). Reagan was scared at first, but eventually became a very brave girl and really enjoyed the little show. Charlotte, on the other hand, hated the fireworks and declared them "too noisy!" So she and I went inside and watched from the kitchen, which was much more acceptable to her.

All in all it was a very fun weekend. But this morning it was back to reality once again. I called Dr. Weller's office to see if a start date for radiation has been determined. We start next Monday, and go for 28 days. Originally I was told 25 days, so 28 is a few more..but not unmanageable. I have to go in on Friday so they can take a few more scans and make sure I'm all lined up right. So my July and most of August is booking up quick with more dr. appointments. Next week will be full of radiation every day, plus pre op appointments for my hernia surgery, and I'll round out the week with my second surgery of 2011 next Friday.

August 18th is my new "can't wait for" date. August 18th will be my last day of radiation...it hasn't even started and I can't wait for it to be ALL OVER.

  1. It will all be over soon (I know not soon enough for you). You will have a very full life thanks to finding the cancer early. It's been a hard 9 months for you and everyone who loves you but you will be healthy in the end and that's what we all want; to have our fun loving, happy go lucky Melissa loving her girls, her husband, family, friends and loving life. Love Mama

Beauty in Life and Death

This is Matt unfortunately Melissa did not get finish her last entry so I will take it from here.  I will try not to have any typos or grammatical errors.  Melissa would really not like that, but she was my official proof reader for all important documents. Melissa and I always strived to look for beauty even in the darkest of times.  It is not always easy but it is always there when you look hard enough.  Our situation the last year and half have not been ideal there were lots of tears and dark times, but the beauty was overwhelming. Whether it was a note, meal, flowers, or text a a low point or just the love we felt from family or friends.  The beauty was there.  We had so many people praying for us and for Melissa to beat cancer once and for all, but I also prayed that Melissa would be pain free and if it was God's will that she passed peacefully.  Melissa was in so much pain last year.  She did not let her slow her down but she was hurting.  She packed more into a year with

Sigourney Weaver

Years ago (okay, fine...decades ago) in high school some boy jokingly called me Sigourney Weaver. I don't remember all of the details of how or why that nickname came about, but it's sort of funny that she and I do have a lot in common now. Well, the Sigourney Weaver of 1997 or whenever "Aliens" came out. Bald, badass, and with an alien growing inside of us!! My alien will be removed tomorrow morning though, Thank GOD! I'm SO over having this gross bump that hurts more and more every day. The other day I couldn't even put my jeans on without it pinching my little alien baby. It turns out I'm developing a "day before surgery" routine. I go shopping. Today it was the first ever "Back to School" shopping for Reagan! She starts Kindergarten next month, so I figured we should get her some new clothes before the full effects of radiation kick in and I'm too tired. (Wait.... I don't think anything will ever make me "too tired&qu

It's Baaaaaaccccckkkkk.......

6 years.... that's how long it's been since I finished with active treatment. However, I took Tamoxifen for 5 years to squash any estrogen left in my body. I recently switched over to a "tougher" aromatase inhibitor call arimidex. These drugs provided comfort and faith that I was doing everything in my power to prevent a recurrence. Guess what?! They failed me. Big time. It's back, and it's back all over. After months of hip pain that my NP chalked up repeatedly to muscle pain, she finally sent me to an orthopedist. He took X-rays and did NOT like what he saw. Additional blood work and bone scans have led to the diagnosis of cancer pretty much throughout my skeletal system. Metastases were found in the skull, scapula, multiple ribs, pelvis, both hips, and spine. Definitely NOT the news I was expecting nor wanting to hear. After an afternoon of crying and occasionally feeling like I was going to throw up, Matt and I met with Dr. Adler, my oncologist. He was
